Coinciding with just after five days of new year's arrival, the day one of twelveth month of the Bhutanese calendar is observed as Chu-nyipa Losar. This day is popularly observed by the eastern people (will be used as 'sharchokpa' in the following lines) of the country just a month prior to Dawa Dangpa Losar. It is hardly seen in the western part of the country though, observing this day.
It is found that eastern people (Sharchokpa) observe basically five significant days with intense fun. Two days of five such as Blessed rainy day (Thruebab) and New year is widely celebrated across the country. However, the western people observe those days such as Lomba and Nyinlo importantly. Similarly, the Sharchokpa celebrate Ngenpa Dguzom (meeting of nine unlucky ones) and Chu-nyipa losar more grandly which is hardly found in the western part of the country.
According to some of the aged people from eastern part, Chu-nyipa losar is vital to celebrate. This day is like neither new year nor blessed rainy day but it is the best day to see off the the existing year with great pleasure for completing successfully and happily. They take this day as an opportunity to thank the year for treating them exceptionally well unlike the bygone years. At the same time, this day is considered as the most favorable day for every member of the family to come together from all places to a house and have happy ending fest. This day also gives opportunity for the people to enjoy the freshly harvested grains in the form of food and brewed alcohol. Sharchokpa take this day as the best time to thank the old year and hope for the same days until the next year.
On this day, Sharchokpa would gather in a house with their extensive family with a huge heap of meat, butter and cheese and with so many vessels of ara (brewed alcohol) in the mid. It gives them time to forget the sufferings and meet each other with grin as they encircle the huge bowl of warmed ara near the smoky chimney. Commonly, in this day people would be obviously play and witness the traditional games of the country. Some would prefer to go for picnics and some would like to be themselves on cloudnine, heavily drenched in alcohol until the next morning.
Therefore, on this momentous day, I personally would like to represent my family and sharchokpa in general to wish all the eastern people to enjoy the day by being thankful to the existing year and with the hope of good vibes in the next new year. May the people wear smiles with an incredibly enormous food crops in presence of all family members at the end of the year. May His Majesty's vision, Gross National Happiness flourish deeply in every nook and corner of the country.
Wish you 'A very happy Chu-nyipa Losar.'
